Panzer IV Ausführung J
At first glance, the Panzer IV Ausf. J, with its additional steel plating on the turret and hull sides, may appear more "complete" or reinforced than older models. However, it is actually a downgraded variant with inferior performance and functionality compared to its predecessors. The Ausf. J was designed not for performance enhancement, but for sheer survival.
Due to dwindling steel resources and the destruction of factories by Allied bombings, parts supplies were severely disrupted. To deploy as many units as possible to the front lines, the design was simplified for mass production.
The most notable simplification was the removal of the electric turret traverse motor. Replaced by a manual hand-crank system, tank crews were forced to endure the grueling task of cranking the handle nearly 200 times to complete a full 360° rotation. This sluggish turret speed became a critical flaw, especially in close-quarters combat, often causing the crew to lose track of enemy targets.
While early Ausf. J models are famous for their Schürzen (additional steel armor plates), later models primarily featured Thoma Schürzen to conserve scarce iron ore. Thoma Schürzen is a mesh-like structure—similar to what we know today as Slat Armor or Cage Armor—often seen on the rear of modern heavy vehicle turrets or hulls. This design was named after General Wolfgang Thoma, who conceived the idea.
Despite these drawbacks, once it gains enough Veterancy Ranks, it transcends its "downgraded" status to become a true ultimate weapon of the Oberkommando West (OKW), capable of destroying any foe. The only differences between the OKW version and the Wehrmacht Panzer IV Ausf. J are their veterancy progression and specific skills; all other base stats remain identical.
