Designated as the special-purpose vehicle Sd.Kfz. 161, the Panzer IV is a 25-ton medium tank standing 2.7m tall and 2.9m wide. Originally deployed in a supporting role to provide fire support for the Panzer III and infantry, it eventually took center stage. As the war dragged on and the limitations of the Panzer III became apparent, the Panzer IV was up-gunned with longer cannons, outshining its counterparts until the very end of the conflict.
Its production numbers were overwhelming; it holds the top spot in German production indices, with over 8,500 units manufactured from the 1939 invasion of Poland to the fall of Berlin in 1945. It was the only German tank to remain on the front lines throughout the entire war without interruption. Thanks to its versatile chassis, it was adapted into anti-aircraft guns, assault guns, and observation vehicles. Its high build quality, ease of handling, and excellent visibility even led Soviet forces to frequently press captured Panzer IVs back into service. Often called the "Warhorse" (Panzerkampfwagen) of the German army, it was regarded as a most reliable ally.
In-game, its base main gun range is 40m, which increases to 50m when hull-down (camouflaged) and up to 70m when equipped with a Commander’s Binoculars, allowing for devastating long-range strikes. Note that the binoculars only function while stationary and require a 1.5s set-up time.
