Sexton 25-Pounder Self-Propelled Gun
The name "Sexton" refers to a church official who rings the cathedral bells; it was chosen to signify a "cleric" who performs the "ringing" (bombardment). During World War II, the British Army maintained a tradition of naming heavy military equipment, such as tanks and warships, after ecclesiastical (religious) titles.
There is a common misconception that the Sexton is simply a renamed American M7 Priest due to their similar chassis. However, while the Priest was based on the M4 Sherman, the Sexton utilized the Ram Cruiser Tank chassis—a Canadian license-built version of the M3 Lee/Grant modified to British specifications. This adaptation was specifically designed to mount the powerful British 25-pounder field gun.
Compared to the American M7B1 Priest, the Sexton has a shorter range, but this is compensated for by its superior shot grouping (accuracy), boasting nearly a 100% ground-hit rate. Additionally, British infantry units gain 25% of the experience earned by the Sexton.
